Tomkins, Thomas

Renaissance composer Thomas Tomkins (1572-1656) was Welsh-born and a student of William Byrd. He served churches in Wales and England, first as choir boy, then organist and composer. He retired to his son's estate in 1656 because of the Civil War and wrote music for the virginal. His only secular music is based on the madrigal, although he referred to this output as "Songs."
