Golden Retriever Gundog Group Sporting Breeds DogsThe Golden Retriever was developed as a waterfowl and game dog in the 19th Century. Hunters in the northern areas of England and Scotland needed a large strong dog that had intelligence, an affinity for the water, the will to work, and a soft mouth for retrieving. The Golden Retriever was developed by cross breeding Tweed Water Spaniels, Newfoundlands, and Irish Setters for those purposes. The Golden Retriever is symmetrical in appearance. It is a powerful, eager, and active dog with a kindly expression. It is alert, cheerful, and self-confident. The untemperamental Golden likes everyone and so is not usually used for guarding. However, it is a very popular guide dog for the disabled. The breed is gentle, sensitive, responsive, and good with children.
