For the purpose of this category description Dartmoor is regarded as the area within the boundaries of the Dartmoor National Park and includes some agricultural "in country" as well as the moorland. Covering an area of about 400 square miles it is sparsely populated with only 30,000 inhabitants and no large towns, and is geared to the tourist industry with an estimated ten million day-visitors per year. The moor is noted for its wild aspect and the rugged granite tors which crown its higher points.
