Foggy Bottom

Situated below Georgetown and Dupont Circle, southwest of Downtown and bounded on the south by the National Mall, Foggy Bottom originated as Washington's industrial section, where smoke from the local gas works mingled with morning fog from the swamps along the Potomac. The draining of the swamps and construction of monuments on the reclaimed land, as well as Washington's growth, have dramatically changed Foggy Bottom's landscape in the last century. The historical neighborhood is ringed by high-rise apartment buildings. The most prominent fixtures are the U.S. Department of State, the George Washington University, the John F. Kennedy Center, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the National Academy of Sciences. The Watergate complex too is here, situated on the waterfront.
