The runes were used by the ancient Germanic peoples as letters for everyday writing, inscriptions on monuments, magic, and apparently divination as well Today the runes play a large role in the reconstruction of the ancient religion of the ancient Germanic peoples, known variously as Asatru or Germanic heathendom.
