Barbaro (April 29, 2003 – January 29, 2007) was an American thoroughbred racehorse that won the 2006 Kentucky Derby. On May 20, 2006 Barbaro fractured three bones in and around the ankle of his right hind leg shortly after the start of the Preakness race. He underwent surgery at the New Bolton Center at the University of Pennsylvania. After a long eight months he was euthanized due to complications that resulted from this injury.
