How It Works
When you purchase banner advertising with a search engine, you are purchasing a known number of impressions, or viewings of your banner. For example, Yahoo may know that the keyword phrase "jet skis" is searched upon 50,000 times per month. At a rate of $55 cpm (or $55 per thousand impressions) purchasing all the monthly impressions would cost you $2750 per month. You can also purchase a portion of the monthly impressions up to the number available.
All search engines will have a minimum ad buy depending on the search engine and the targeting method. Banners can be targeted by category, page, or keyword search.

An effective banner design can double the click-through rate of your ad, thereby doubling the return of your advertising dollar. You should rotate two or three banners during your campaign to test response and to keep a single banner from getting "stale".
Once you have determined your ad budget, you need to decide which keywords or phrases to target.
