Southern Wesleyan University is a four-year, liberal arts institution dedicated to the concept that God is the source of all truth and wisdom. Its mission is to create an atmosphere in which members of the university community work together toward wholeness through the integration of personal faith, intellectual pursuits, and practical living. The university seeks to meet the needs of students with various abilities and backgrounds, enabling them to realize their personal and professional educational goals. The university was founded in 1906 at its present location in the town of Central, five miles north of Clemson, South Carolina. Over the years, it has operated a high school and served as a junior college. In 1959, it was reorganized into a senior liberal arts college. Southern Wesleyan changed its name from Central Wesleyan College in October, 1994. It is sponsored by the Wesleyan Church.
