Newcastle Tyne and Wear England United Kingdom

A city in the county of Tyne and Wear located on the north bank of the river Tyne, Newcastle upon Tyne was originally a Roman fort and river crossing. In Norman times a castle was built on the site of this fort as part of the northern defences against the Scots and a medieval walled town grew up around it. The town became an important military and commercial centre and around 1400 was made a county in its own right. Today Newcastle remains the commercial centre of the north east of England.
