Canadian Alliance - Reform Party History Conservative Party Parties
The Reform Party was created in 1987 by western Canadians dissatisfied with the Progressive Conservative government of Brian Mulroney. Preston Manning became the party's first (and only) leader and elected its first MP, Deborah Grey, in a 1989 by-election. Reform had a major breakthrough in the 1993 election returning 54 MPs and displacing the Progressive Conservatives as the main right wing party in Canada. In 1997 the party became the Official Opposition however failed to make major gains east of Manitoba. The Canadian Alliance was formed in 2000 in an attempt to expand the party's appeal but again failed to make significant progress east of Manitoba under leader Stockwell Day. In 1993 the Alliance reached an agreement to merge with the Progressive Conservative party and end divisions on the right.
