Grimshaw, John Atkinson Artists Art History

The paintings of John Atkinson Grimshaw (1836-1893) are well known and utterly distinctive. He was inspired to take up landscape painting by another Leeds artist, John Inchbold, and his early works are painted in the Pre-Raphaelite landscape style. He produced several very fine works, including some of the Lake District and Yorkshire. He is now best known for his dock scenes and moonlit landscapes. Despite the vast quantity of paintings and drawings produced, only a few are in public museums and galleries, the majority being in private collections, and rarely seen. Leeds City Art Gallery has a good collection of his work.
