This category is for actresses who have won the Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role. The first award recipient, Janet Gaynor, was presented the award for best actress of 1927/28; she won for her acting work in three films: "7th Heaven," "Street Angel," and "Sunrise." Since that time, actresses are judged for their performace in a single film released in the previous year of the award ceremony.Actresses who have won multiple times will have multiple years next to their names. If two actresses are listed for one year, that would indicate a tie in votes.
