Griffes, Charles Tomlinson

(1884-1920) His musical education was in Germany where he studied composition with Englebert Humperdink. Upon returning to the United States in 1907, he took a teaching job at the Hackley School in Tarrytown, New York. By 1919 he was achieving notice as a composer with performances by the Boston Symphony Orchestra of The Pleasure-Dome of Kubla Kahn. His sudden death in 1920 at age 35 is attributed by some to the many hours he had to spend copying and preparing his music for the many performances resulting from his increased popularity.
