Tartar-born composer Sofia Gubaidulina (1931- ) studied and worked in Moscow before moving to Germany. Russian, Caucasian, and Asian folk and ritual instruments and Western influences combined to make her work familiar, yet different from other compositions of the post-Stalinist years.
