Taylor, Joseph Deems

The American mind probably forgets Joseph Deems Taylor (1885-1966) outside his narration of Disney's Fantasia. However, Taylor was among the most popular of his country's musical figures in the first half of the Twentieth Century. His The King's Henchman was the American opera first broadcast on radio and many of his works enjoyed runs at New York's Metropolitan Opera. Taylor's other abilities and occupations included radio commentator, author, and educator. Taylor served as a member of the ASCAP Board of Directors from 1933 to 1966 and was its president 1942 to 1948. In his honor, the society named an award for him, given to recognize excellence in books, articles, broadcasts, and websites on the subject of music.
