This category is for English language websites and pages relevant to India, an ancient land dating to 2500 B.C. Around 500 A.D., what had been a tangle of kingdoms became unified under the Hindu beliefs of the Gupta dynasty. Islamic challenges from Turks and Afghans gained in the first half of the second millennium A.D. Britain established an outpost in 1619 and by 1850 had made India a colony. Resistance led by Mohandas Gandhi beginning in 1920 led to the establishment of India as an independent republic in 1950. The country is very densely populated and struggles with persistent poverty. The country is also known as Bhārata in Sanskrit and some modern languages, and as Bhārat in Hindi. It is sometimes also called Hindustān.
