Payne Counties Oklahoma United StatesPayneOriginally part of the Creek Nation and the Cherokee Outlet, and known as "Old Oklahoma." Payne County was settled by the Land Run of April 22, 1889. Several years prior to that, William L. Couch had led the first colonists of Boomers in their attempt to establish a town at the juncture of Boomer and Stillwater creeks, a place they called Stillwater. Couch's group was originated by David L. Payne who died in Kansas just before the group moved into Oklahoma lands. His name was later given to the county. Land Area: 697 square miles
