Lewis Mumford (1895-1990), an American author, critic, philosopher, and historian, garnered many honors such as the National Book Award (1962); The Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964; a 1965 LLD from the University of Edinburgh; a doctorate of architecture from the University of Rome in 1967; the National Medal for Literature (1972).
