Central Banks Finance Government

Central banks, also known as reserve banks or monetary authorities, define and issue legal tender (money). Their precise role varies from country, but most also manage the foreign-exchange reserves. Some also issue government debt, and some supervise parts of the financial system. Currency boards issue money the value of which is pegged to a different currency, usually the US dollar.
