Focus is on the history of the region of the Balkans that was formerly united as the nation of Yugoslavia, including regions and nations known as Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Vojvodina, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Hercegovina, and Macedonia (former Yugoslav Republic of). Portions of the region were at various earlier times included in the Ottoman Empire, Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, and other super-national groupings.
