Tibet China Territorial Disputes

Sites relating to the dispute between China and Tibet over the Tibetan region. Most international legal scholars agree that from 1911 until the Chinese invasion in 1949, Tibet was an independent state by modern standards. The Chinese government asserts that Tibet is part of China and always has been. Starting after the invasion of Tibet, Tibetans have been struggling to maintain their culture and practice their religion. For example, Tibetans are forbidden to possess a photo of the 14th Dalai Lama in their home. Chinese authorities have reacted to possession of the photo with imprisonment in some cases. The Chinese government views those asking for Tibetan autonomy or independence as wanting to split up China.
