Karl Barth (1886-1968) was born in Basel and and received his theological training in Germany. After 12 years as a pastor of Swis Refomred churches in two small towns in Switzerland, he began to write. His work on a commentary in Romans marked the beginning of his departure from his liberal training. He further refined his thoughts, developing a total theological system. In it he emphasized God's holiness, his incomprehensibility to the human mind and his sovereign grace. He then began teaching this new theology in European universities. A major framer of the Barmen declaration, in 1935 he was forced to flee from Nazi Germany to Basel.
