Mountain State University West Virginia United States North America

Located at the heart of Appalachia, Beckley was in the midst of the Great Depression of 1932, when a group of local citizens, realizing that many youth were not getting the opportunity to attend an institution of higher education, conceived the idea of a junior College which would be dedicated to meeting the needs of the local community. At that time, less than 10 percent of the high school graduates of Raleigh County were attending College. The global view taken by the new administration resulted in the need for a name change, thus Mountain State University was born. The new name reflected the new enhanced vision and mission of the institution, while magnifying the University's presence in a progressive educational environment
