Bridgeport [Fairfield County] was incorporated from Fairfield and Stratford in 1821. Its Native American name is "Pequonock". Area, 19.4 sq. miles. Population, 2000 Census, 139,529. Voting districts, city elections, 22; state elections, 32. Principal industries, precision manufacturing, health care, business and banking, legal, back-office operations, engineering and architecture, publishing and printing, and insurance. Bridgeport includes the areas known as Barnum and Noble.
