Successful and talented actor, playing such film roles as Michelangelo, Ben-Hur, and Moses. Winner of an Academy Award for Best Actor in 1959. President of the Screen Actors Guild from 1966-1971. Ranked #28 in Empire (UK) magazine's "The Top 100 Movie Stars of All Time" list [October 1997]. Active member and past president of the National Rifle Association until his self retirement in 2003, due to illness.
